My dear pregger friends- have I been MIA or what?   Can you believe it has been over a week since I have written?  I have been going through withdrawal!  No worries all is ok on my end-  I have just been sick.   Trust me if I had written anything in the last week my demeanor would have been less then positive and you would have probably stopped reading!  I have had a terrible cold/flu/something and again it totally kicked my booty.  It’s funny because I thought at first that it was that whole pregnancy sinuses or maybe allergies that we hear so much about but this turned into something much much more and is still lingering.  Even my little netti pot hasn’t been helping to much- total misery.  The sneezing, the incessant runny nose, the coughing, and not to mention the exhaustion!  It is never ending my friends.   I even went home from work one day which is something I never ever do.  We have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow so hopefully she can recommend something for me but I am also hoping that I am magically cured by tomorrow because that always seems to happen by the time you get to the doctors!

Tomorrow is a big day- we get to find out the sex of the baby!  I can’t believe I am already five months and that it is finally here.  I am so excited.   We did the string and ring test the other night and it says we are having a boy!  Hubby thinks that test must be 100% accurate- we will have to confirm this tomorrow.   All the online tests say it is most likely a girl so it will be interesting to see.   Everyone keeps asking me what I feel and until lately I really didn’t feel one way or another on the matter.  I feel like it might be a boy though for a few reasons.  First- I can’t come up with a single girl’s name that I like.   Whereas I am totally in to our boy name.  Second- I became inspired on how to decorate a boy nursery this weekend.  I think a light green color with giraffes would be so cute.   Giraffes are kind of like the boy version of leopard print (which I adore- well let’s face it-I adore any animal print).  I saw a stuffed one in the window while driving by Galt baby and on Gossip Girl last night.   Yes I just outed myself on another guilty pleasure I like to watch insert embarrassment here but they are beyond adorable.  It is going to be so much fun to decorate.

I am still kind of in that in between stage.  I play a little game with hubby every morning called pregnant or fat.   I try on outfits to wear to work and he tells me if I look p or f.   Most of the time it is an F girls!  I have found that tight clothes make me look more p than f and that I can fit in a lot my sweater dresses.  I also figured out that it might just be better to accentuate the positive (bump) than to hide it.  Did I tell you about the faux leather leggings I ordered?  OMG I am attaching a picture because they are to die ant totally rocking my maternity world.  They just came in the mail yesterday and of course it is going to be 80 degrees the next few days so I am not able to wear them but I cannot wait! My mom thinks I am literally insane but I don’t care I am having fun with this.  I have been going crazy on the my “maternity” purchases so I am going to go on hiatus here for a bit but could go on and on about all the great ways I have found to jazz up this pregnancy.  Even when I am just running errands on the weekends I want to feel cute-  I bought a men’s burbbery plaid shirt on ebay and it looks so cute over leggings-  perfect for running errands on the weekend or even under a blazer with some heals to work I can pull it off- love.  Let’s not forget the scarf my latest love affair-  I can get away with wearing leggings and a t-shirt to work with a cute scarf and blazer over the top with heels-  take the blazer off and throw on some flats and a cardigan at home and am totally comfy and stylish enough to go out for a casual dinner- all because of the scarf- loves it.  Who knew pregnancy fashion could be so much fun?

 

Livin La Vida Legging September 9, 2010

Eighteen weeks three days and how many hours…Another good day on the books!  Allergies are still hanging around but I swear the neti pot and my Himalayan Salt Lamps are helping tremendously!  The weather has changed to fall and I couldn’t be more excited!  Fall just might be my favorite time of the year.   The foliage is so beautiful and the weather in Chicago is wonderful which makes for amazing fashion.  I am living la vida leggings lately and loving it!  I got my shipment form bloomies yesterday and found a few successful pieces which I am beyond excited about.  Mainly I ordered a couple of dolman sleeve dresses that are beyond perfect with leggings.  Because I am 5’9 a lot of “dresses” these days tend to be on the short side and work perfectly with a pair of leggings.  The dolman sleeves make a lot of room in the tummy region so accommodating to the bump.   I tried these little numbers on and shoved a throw pillow underneath and am thinking these are going to work for awhile – yay!  Could that be more exciting?

Unfortunately my shopping high came to a swift halt after a lovely conversation with my mother – go figure.   She lives in Ohio and I moved to Chicago almost fifteen years ago and you would think she would be over it….but she’s not!   I seriously cannot get through a conversation without a snide remark from her about how her grandchild won’t know her.  My personal favorite is was when I was asking her about cribs last night she made all these snide remarks about how she doesn’t know what cribs are like in Chicago.  Seriously?  Is there a special manufacturer that only makes cribs for people in Chicago?  I kept telling her we have all the same stores for babies that she does because they are chains and even those that aren’t sell pretty much the same stuff-  she wanted no part of it.  I also mentioned that it might be nice to get a convertible crib with matching furniture that the baby will be able to use for awhile – apparently I couldn’t be more wrong in my thinking and no one in Ohio does it that way.   People buy one crib and then get a bed and other furniture after they are done with the nursery.  I also should be wearing maternity clothes instead of trying to get away without wearing them because that is what people in Ohio do. Is there an opposite of wind beneath my wings? Like I care what my cousins that I never talk to do!  Note to self do not punish the baby for the rest of his/her life if he/she decides to move out of town!

On another note has anyone researched or participated in activities that allegedly help your baby become smarter?   We have been listening to classical music during the commute back to work.   I recognize that a lot of the studies surrounding classical music have come out bunk.  I just figure that it is better than my baby recognizing Howard Stern’s voice!  I did read that DHA is apparently very important during the last trimester as that is when all the brain and retina development happens rapidly.  Check- in my PNV!  Apparently- eating proteins and specifically eggs helps as well.   Gives new meaning to the word egghead does it not?  Luckily I start every weekday morning with an egg or two so got that one covered as well.  I also read that there is a correlation to morning sickness and baby brilliance.  Because morning sickness is caused by the surge in pregnancy hormones the theory is the stronger the surge- the better the development.  So to all the ladies out there worshipping the porcelain gods out there- you might just be taking one for the team and growing that intelligent baby!  Any other suggestions out there on how to mother the next Einstein or Bill Gates?

 

Kick it up a notch! September 8, 2010

Hi fellow pregos- how is your week going?   Mine not so bad!   I am feeling pretty good today and last night was actually able to do stuff when I got home from work-  a miracle-  I normally crash on the couch and can only muster up enough energy to make dinner -if that.   I went through my closet last night and bid my pants adieu!  So long suckers!  I also put away all my skirts and tops that just aren’t going to happen for me anymore.  Kinda of hated it- kinda loved it.  Now I have a good idea of what is available to me right now- and it isn’t so bad.  I will be putting a lot of stuff on ebay this week though since I likely won’t be wearing any of these clothes for a long while and have no idea what will fit me-  I feel the urge to purge!

Do any of you have pets?   My husband is convinced that my dogs know that I am expecting.  My little one likes to nestle on my stomach and the big one seems to be by my side a lot more these days.  My thoughts are that it is because I have been home so much more now but he thinks otherwise….thoughts?  Do pets have an intuition?  We have two family rooms in our house which are pretty much his and hers.  Mainly because I fill the Tivo with my trash reality TV shows and need a place to watch them in private. The doggies usually join me there even when hubby is home. It is the only room in the house that our Bernese Mountain Dog  is allowed on the couch and when I am not in fetal position sometimes he joins me with his head on my lap.  I am sure this is not helping my allergies but I can’t resist he is amazingly sweet and it is wondy!  Last night hubby came up for one of our shared programs-  Chopped- (who doesn’t’ love that show?) I told him I would take the chaise so he could experience the couch love with our Berner.  I am still laughing at what transpired.  Hubby, who I might add is 6’4, was crouched in the corner of the couch leaving all the room for our dog excitedly ready to sit with him.  The dog wanted no part of it and kept jumping down to lay on the floor by me.  Since the Berner is his dog- hubby was just sitting there all looking sad so he got up and grabbed my Havanese and had him lay on the couch with him.  Oh the games we play!

Speaking of playing- I don’t’ feel like my baby is doing much of it.  I don’t know if it is because this is my first go around but I am just not getting the fluttering sensation very often…is this a cause for concern- or do I just not recognize what it feels like?   I am 18 weeks and 2 days and am not feeling a lot of movement.  This baby needs to kick it up a notch!  What I do feel is like myorgans need to rearrange all the time and when I stand up I almost feel like motion sickness or something for a sec.  I call it my body getting re-organ-ized.  Is that the baby moving?  I read that it can also be mistaken for feeling of hunger.  I do feel like I am starving in the morning I did tell hubby last night after eating dinner that I still felt hungry- was that really my baby moving to thank me for a delicious meal- or me subconsciously coming up with a reason to eat a piece of the AMAZING banana cake my MIL made me?  I might add-  I am feeling some hunger right now- Should I be getting a kick out of this?

 

Belly Buster September 7, 2010

Labor Day is over and back to the grind. How was your weekend? Any fun BBQs or Labor? My weekend was not without its drama- something new. Saturday I noticed we had a message on our home phone. We both use our cells and office phones mainly so we don’t get a lot of calls at home. Low and behold- it was from my Dr’s office. WTF?? I was freaking out. I don’t have another appt for another two weeks so it definitely wasn’t a reminder. It was a message from the lab that said we have a “non-emergency” message for you so please call us back. Uhhh…I hadn’t been to the Dr in two weeks- what could they possibly be calling about? I don’t have any billing issues with them. I am not going to lie if I was a neurotic person I would have lost it over a long weekend. They left the message at 5 to 5 on Friday. Who does that? My mom and mother in law went ballistic. Surprisingly I took it in stride and hubby was a miffed. I figured that they lost something or who knows what and if it was something to be at all concerned with my actual doctor would have been the one calling and not saying non-emergency. But still- isn’t everything your doctor has to say urgent when you are preggers? Doesn’t all lab work mean something that you don’t want to wait three days to find out! I called first thing this morning and found out that it was to tell me our genetic screening came back normal. Hello- I was told if they didn’t call me in three days it was normal so this was not news. Thank god nothing was wrong! I might add I felt pretty good about not getting all worked up over this though- kudos to me I really am a grown up- maybe I actually am ready for this!

As if that wasn’t excitement enough- the weekend ended with a bang- Mark your calendars, it is official I can no longer button my pants and thus this will be the last day of 2010 that I wear my regular pants. Am I now officially preggo? I still think I look more fat than pregnant but people keep telling me I have a glow. I feel like the glow is more attributed to my new skin care products than anything but who knows-I’ll take the compliment! Thank you very much! Ugghh on the pants though. To get by today, I did the rubber band trick but don’t think this is really working for me- kind of un comfy. Did die laughing when I told hubby I needed one this morning and he brought me a large one thinking I would put the whole band around my waste to hold up the pants. Still laughing out loud when I think of that. Of course I immediately did my online research. My research concludes….I have no interest in investing in any maternity pants. I rarely wear them in the fall and winter and since I own my own business and am the only woman that works here, I am thinking that I might need to institute a “pregnancy” dress code that includes jeans. So maybe I buy a pair or two of cute maternity jeans and work them in with leggings dresses blazers etc. I did break down today and ordered a couple of maternity tank tops- mine are all so short so I need them longer to layer. I bought a ton of stuff on sale at bloomies this weekend- all non-maternity that I think are going to work AND be super cute. I will keep you posted upon arrival. Can I just share that I got these really cute faux leather leggings- OMG to die! I am excited to see how things fit – I suspect that whatever I get now will only last me a couple of months until I am huge and then I will reassess and purchase again. Good times. I also am wondering about this Bella Band- any recommendations? Has anyone tried one? Do they work? Since it was a long weekend and I had a day of misery (allergies) I had a chance to catch up on my reading. Am I the only person astounded by what they read pregnancy books? There is so much information contrary to what I have experienced that I am incredulous. Yes I know I have obsessed about genetic testing but I really need to set the record straight. All of the books I have say that if you are over 35 it is recommended to get an amnio. WHAT???? This is just not true. Girls if you are over 35 and thinking about genetic testing please read this. There are steps in the process and you can rule out genetic issues without and invasive amnio or CVS sampling but you have to start early in your pregnancy. We were offered genetic testing which involved a blood test and an ultrasound. Then four weeks later we took another blood test. We were told that if both came back normal than you were 97% likely to have a healthy baby. Why on earth would I do an amnio or CVS now? A simple set of blood tests and a fun ultrasound were all I needed. If we had different results I don’t know what we would do next amnio or not but my point is you can get a lot of information without any risk to the baby. Ok off my soap box on this…now on to some of the funnier things I read:

Cheeseburger Crotch? What the hell is that? I have had nothing even remotely close to this. Is this normal or do these ladies need to learn a thing or two about personal hygiene?

Constipation- This also hasn’t been an issue for me- I eat fruits and veggies daily so maybe this helps.

Don’t use Coconut Oil- There are so many health benefits associated with coconuts that I can’t even believe I read this too crazy to comment on.

You will have more energy in your second trimester??? For me- not so much. All I want to do is rest and sleep. Even though my lovely bladder usually keeps me form sleeping in. I feel tired all of the time. Does anyone know how many hours per night are recommended? Can’t seem to find THAT info anywhere.

A few things I have experienced that none of the books have mentioned:

The Caboose gets stuck – Am I alone or have you noticed that when doing a number two that the train just does not want to fully leave the station? I mean seriously if I don’t want to sit on the pot for thirty minutes I might need to start using baby wipes.

Speaking of pots….I spent the weekend with my Netti Pot- Do believe the hype- what I like to call my nose douche is working wonders on clearing my pregnancy sinuses! I have used it in the morning and am already noticing a difference. Love it!

I feel like the guinea pig of natural products and home remedies for pregnancy related issues.  I will try anything.   I must tell you that a lot of them are just not working for me.  When I found out I was pregnant at thirty seven I knew that I was already at increased risk for genetic issues just because of my age and wanted to try to keep things as basic and as natural as possible.   We are so fortunate that thus far all of our genetic screening has come back positive- so far so good.  Unfortunately this isn’t the case for everyone.  I  have a family member who is autistic that has really given me a different perspective.  Her family has some very strong beliefs on diet and vaccines and shared a lot of information with me that I had previously been unaware of.  I know that there are a lot of controversial theories out there and even though I am not sure where I stand on all of them it is definitely on my radar screen because I am in a high risk category.   There does seem to be a common opinion that there are an increased number of children diagnosed with it.  Even though I am not certain, I don’t take any of the information lightly when thinking about my pregnancy and how I want to raise my own children.

What I have found out is that there is no right answer.  There aren’t a lot of facts because women do not want to sign up for scientific studies when they are pregnant- no one wants to put their pregnancy at risk- so a lot of research is done on animals and what is “considered” to be safe and what should be avoided is not absolute.  Personally I am a  “what iffer”.  Tylenol is considered safe- but what if it isn’t?  High fructose corn syrup and unnatural sweeteners like aspartame are said to be safe by most- but what if it isn’t?  Benedryl was once considered not safe but now is…but what if it really isn’t? Many holistic practitioners would recommend otherwise.  The information is so confusing!  I mean my god it was once acceptable to drink and smoke when you were pregnant!  I think every expectant woman and mother needs to do what she is comfortable with and that is the right thing to do.   For me I am trying to find a balance.  Do I eat everything organic?  No.  (wish)-  do I have high fructose corn syrup from time to time?  Yes but I try to avoid it.   Will I take a sip of a diet coke every once in greatwhile-  sure but no more.  In the case of medication I am not there yet- I am scared to ingest anything other than my PNVs-  Tylenol, prescription pills, herbs you name it.   I may be making this pregnancy harder than it needs to be in dealing with these maladies…but I just keep thinking what if?  I can deal with a lot to keep this baby healthy.  I realize that I am the extreme and am totally ok with it.  I figure though that I should use some of my crazy for good and put the word out on some of the products and remedies that I have tried during the second trimester so far:

  1. Burt’s Bees- Sun block and After Sun-  – not so much-  they seemed to work as a sunscreen but would not absorb into the skin.   Acne solution did not work for me at all.  Hand Cream-  smell you later-  not really a fan of any of these products- wish I was because they are everywhere!
  2. Yoga – Helps with back pain, and relaxation.  Would recommend Yoga for Pregnancy DVD but hey I started out already enjoying yoga.
  3. Jane Iredale –  Cleansing Mitt-  Sucksville.  Their claim- it is supposed to clean your skin without soap and thus no chemicals.  The fact- I tried this for a few days and immediately broke out.  Say hello to the new heater on my chin!  It is also hard to get the make up off the mitt.  The solution- it does remove make up effectively so I think I am going to use it for that only but not regularly.
  4. Simply Divine Botanicals- Amazing.  Their claim- chemical free skincare- The fact- ingredients are natural and they work.   I have oily skin and use the following:  You Can’t Zit Here – AM and PM- Pack Your Bags- Skincredible (daily)- Baby Face- every other night.   I will use these long after I am pregnant.
  5. Moroccan Method Shampoo and Conditioner- hates it- it was like washing my hair with dirt.  It did not feel cleaned or conditioned afterward and took forever to dry.   It left my hair stringy and not very manageable.  I am so glad I got the samples only- because I will not use these products again.   The conditioning spray was ok but not great.  I am sticking with ABBA- still a few chemies but vegan and much more accessible- you can get it at Ulta.
  6. Bare Escentuals Vs Jane Iredale Make Up-  I have now used both products and don’t really notice a big difference in the foundations except the Jane is much more expensive.    Jane Iredale Lip Gloss however is amazing and lasts a lot longer than BE that is a keeper.
  7. Avalon Organic Soap- has some chemies but still gives a lather and smells good.  I will continue using this until I find something better- available at Trader Joes and Whole Foods and not too expensive.
  8. Salt water rinse – supposed to help with bleeding gums and sore throat- been doing this the last few days….seems to help a little but not a cure- will continue and keep you updated.

So what works for you?  Tell me the good the bad and the ugly – anything helped you with stretch marks or what about the god awful swelling I keep hearing so much about?  I would love to hear any suggestions from real people- not the paid advertisements I read online all day- what is the skinny?
